Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Bipolar Disorder

Musical terms such as “rhythm”, “phase” and “oscillation” are central to the language used to describe circadian rhythms.

There is a long history of bipolar composers who communicated their experience through music and music is highly valued by the bipolar community as a means of communicating experiences.
AMBIENT-BD represents a unique opportunity to use sleep data to drive the creation of unique musical pieces.

In collaboration with the AMBIENT-BD Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP), we will be creating pieces of music to depict the experiences of sleep in individuals with bipolar disorder using various forms of sleep data.

The Sound of Sleep

Using data from activity watches, sleep evaluation devices and radar technology, different aspects of sleep are recorded and can give us an idea of how a person slept. Working with our LEAP, we also apply the lived experience of bipolar disorder to this data to give a feeling of what sleep is like for some people with bipolar disorder.

Check out these videos using this sleep data to create music, and listen to the sound of sleep.
